Furnas: Volcano, Hot Springs and Cozido — Tour or Drive?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read
Take a guided day tour if you want Furnas, lunch and eastern São Miguel organised in one booking. Drive yourself if the thermal pools are your priority and you want to control when and how long you bathe. The choice is not really access versus no access: it is coordination versus flexibility.
What the main tour formats include
The Eastern São Miguel van tour to Furnas and Nordeste lasts eight hours, starts at €85 and includes lunch. Its route combines the geothermal sights of Furnas with waterfalls and coastal viewpoints in Nordeste. It is the strongest one-day overview for travellers who do not want to navigate or park.
The Furnas Volcano and Tea Plantation tour with lunch starts at €72. Its listing specifically includes the local stew cooked using geothermal heat and a tea-plantation visit. Choose it when Cozido das Furnas is central to the day rather than just a possible lunch stop.
Neither title alone proves that thermal-pool admission is included. Check the selected option before payment; a visit to Furnas and bathing in Furnas are different inclusions.
Why a tour works
Furnas is more than one pin on a map. The village, fumaroles, lake area, lunch and bathing sites compete for the same day, while wider east-island tours add distant viewpoints. A guide removes the sequencing problem and lets everyone look out of the window rather than nominate a driver.
The compromise is time. An eight-hour route that reaches Nordeste cannot give every stop unlimited attention. If you want a long soak, a slow lunch and a walk around the lake, a broad day tour may feel rushed even when it is well run.

Why driving works
Driving gives you control when low cloud or rain shifts the best part of the day. You can choose one thermal site, arrive at the time required by its current ticket system and leave the wider east-coast circuit for another day. It is also the better format if somebody in your group does not want an eight-hour organised outing.
The cost is responsibility: route planning, parking, admission checks and a sober driver remain yours. Do not assume that a restaurant serving Cozido always has space or that a thermal pool accepts an unplanned arrival. Confirm current reservations directly.
If you drive yourself, compare local rental firms directly and confirm the excess, deposit, fuel policy and whether an additional driver is included.
Cozido and hot springs are separate decisions
Cozido das Furnas is cooked with geothermal heat, but ordering lunch does not grant access to a cooking area or a thermal pool. Similarly, a tour that mentions the Furnas volcano may be a sightseeing route without bathing. Read the inclusions line by line.
Bring swimwear only after confirming a bathing stop. Thermal water can discolour light fabric, so use something you do not mind staining and follow the venue’s health guidance.
The recommendation
For a first visit without a car, book the Eastern São Miguel van tour to Furnas and Nordeste. Choose the lunch-focused tour when Cozido and tea are the priorities. Drive independently when bathing time matters more than covering the east in one day.
